How Zynga, Facebook and Groupons Go-To Auditor Rew

Featured

This story appears in the May 7 edition of Forbes magazine on page 150.

Zynga, Facebook and all use an independent auditor that is simultaneously inventing the rules for social media accounting.

Somewhere, Arthur Andersen is shuddering.

For 26 million digital farmers working their fields and crops on Zynga’s popular game FarmVille, obtaining a virtual tractor, seeder or harvester can be transformative. A make-believe tractor, for example, ?allows you to plow four plots at a time. It’s the kind of productivity that laptop-bound farmers dream of.

The problem is that earning enough FarmVille currency to afford heavy farm equipment takes time. But like other social gaming companies, Zynga allows users to speed up the process by converting real dollars from their credit card and PayPal accounts into the FarmVille currency used to buy virtual goods. A hot rod tractor, for example, costs 55 in Farm Cash, which translates into $10 in real U.S. money.

For Zynga, which also owns CityVille,http://www.airjordanretrocheapsale.com/, Zynga Poker, Mafia Wars and Words With Friends, jordan 12 sale, virtual tractor sales are big business. The fledgling company likely sells millions of tractors each year (that compares with 190,000 real tractors sold in 2011 in the U.S. and Canada). Sales of virtual goods, from FarmVille hay to Mafia Wars assault rifles, accounted for nearly all of Zynga’s $1.1 billion in 2011 revenues—and 12% of revenue for Zynga’s distributor, Facebook.

Which makes it very helpful that both have the same friend in the ?accounting business: Ernst & Young, the public auditor for Zynga and Facebook.

Ernst & Young wrote ,cheap jordan 8, literally. The third-largest accounting firm ?behind PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte, it leads its rivals in the technology and burgeoning social media space. Neither the Financial Accounting Standards Board nor the Securities & Exchange Commission has issued rules for the likes of livestock love potions and virtual harvesters, so an E&Y document (updated this past March) lays out three revenue-recognition models it deems consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

See the sidebar to this story,

Such publications are well worth E&Y’ s effort, jordan retro 6, since its ” consulting unit helps companies develop their financial systems, cheap jordan 3, controls and accounting policies well before they are ready to come public. Which is potentially problematic. A firm that consults on byzantine accounting rules for unusual revenue streams and also offers “independent” auditing services for the same companies?

At the margins, the multi-layered glittering event will have political impact here and in the US. For President Obama, there is nothing to lose in an election year to be seen bonding with one of the more right-wing leaders in Europe. As far as any of the Republicans’ potential candidates have a strategy for the forthcoming election, it is to portray the President as a dangerous leftie. Yet here is the supposedly left-wing Obama enjoying effortless rapport with a prime minister implementing an economic experiment in the UK that The New York Times reminds its readers on a regular basis is more extreme in its austerity than anywhere else in Europe.

For Cameron, there is some gold in the dust, too. On the economy, public services and Europe, he implements policies measurably to the right of Margaret Thatcher,Jordan 9 for Sale, and yet he brilliantly projects himself as a one-nation centrist. A glowing relationship with the international superstar of the centre left reinforces the contortion.

Cameron knows, too, that the British journalists accompanying him will be dazzled at this affirmation of prime ministerial authority. As Leader of the Opposition, Neil Kinnock never fully recovered from being rebuffed by President Reagan on a visit to Washington, while Margaret Thatcher acquired additional sheen from her love-in with the leader of a superpower. Blair remained convinced that, even after Iraq, his close relationship with Bush impressed Middle England, the only electoral constituency that worried him. Perhaps he was right. He went on to win a general election after Iraq.

But in the cases of Obama and Cameron, the electoral impact of this particular visit will be minimal. In the US, most voters in their famous insularity will not notice Cameron. In the UK, the next election is a long way off and other factors will determine whether Cameron succeeds in his highly ambitious project, a claim for the centre ground while implementing radical right-wing policies.

Similarly, the substance of their talks is of little significance even if the topics are monumental in scope. The military mission in Afghanistan was doomed long ago, when George Bush turned his impatient attention to Iraq. In the build-up to the war in Iraq, several informed voices, including that of Clare Short after a lengthy ministerial visit to Afghanistan in September 2002, warned that the Taliban was starting to regroup on the outskirts of Kabul because military resources were being switched. The voices were ignored and, ever since, troops have been engaged in an impossible, deadly mission to plaster over the growing cracks. Both Obama and Cameron agree on the need for withdrawal, and it is in their interests to pretend that the long war has achieved its aims.

Leading in the post-Iraq era, there is also quite a lot of consensus between the two of them on the very different but daunting challenges of Syria and Iran, even if there are differences over the attitude of Israel in the case of Iran. Nothing dramatic of substance will surface from the talks.

?

The change that will arise from this visit relates to Cameron’s outlook when he returns to the UK. For three days, Cameron has been a prime minister unencumbered. He has been hailed and revered by a president, rock stars and on the US news networks. Briefly, he will forget that he is the first British premier since Harold Wilson in February 1974 to fail to win an overall majority. For a time, he will feel fleetingly presidential and, being human, will enjoy the sensation.

In his joint press conferences with Bush, jordan concord 11, Tony Blair seemed to forget altogether that he was not a president and was, in humdrum reality, a mere prime minister dependent on the support of parliament, a fuming Chancellor breathing down his neck and his party. Similarly, in a different international context, Cameron could almost forget briefly about Nick Clegg and the constraints of coalition as he was treated like a prime ministerial superstar.

Cameron’s personal relations with Clegg are still good. So they should be. From sweeping spending cuts to overhauling the NHS, education reform and welfare changes the Conservatives are implementing their planned revolution with the support of the Liberal Democrats. Nonetheless, the smaller party and its leader raise a lot of concerns, are getting more assertive in their public distinctiveness and take up a lot of time within government.

After being treated like a mighty leader in the US, Cameron will find it a little more irritating when he returns to negotiate one more time with Clegg as to what should be in the Budget. The thought will cross his mind: "One minute, I am discussing world affairs at the White House. The next I am dealing with someone who wants a Tycoon Tax. What am I doing here?"

Deep down, he knows he is there because he did not win the last election outright, cheap jordan shoes, but that thought will go a little deeper down now. More specifically, jordan shoes 11, Cameron’s Euro-scepticism will deepen a little, too. Cameron is not as ardent an Atlanticist as Blair felt he had to be. But he will note how much easier and glamorous it is negotiating with a president between rock gigs and basketball matches compared with late nights in Brussels trying to get Sarkozy on side and exerting a veto that vetoes nothing at one in the morning.

Cameron will also be aware that it is in foreign policy, the issues he discussed with Obama as if he were a mighty PM,jordan retro 3, where he has no free hand. In some ways, the Liberal Democrats are more assertive over their internationalist credentials than they are over domestic policy.

This is the change from David Cameron’s trip to Washington. Instead of nearly always being grateful to Nick Clegg, he will become a little more resentful that he is not as mighty as he was in the US. If relations between the two Coalition partners are relatively smooth, this will be a minor development. If there are further tensions over policy, a little irritation could grow into something big.

Mobile First How ESPN Delivers to the Best Availab

Featured

[Full disclosure: My brother, John Kosner, is Executive Vice President, Digital and Print Media at ESPN]

In a in last week’s Newsweek, Nick Summers asks, “is the sports behemoth too big for its own good?” He’s talking about how the per subscriber fees that cable companies (and consumers) have to pay for the network’s suite of channels to remain in the basic cable tier. As broadcast fees for sporting events have soared, so has the cost of ESPN to the cable companies, and in turn, to their customers. The point may be moot, though, as internet distribution models are likely to render all cable tiers as “premium” by offering truly customized delivery.

There’s also, perhaps, some sour grapes at play. is, by the writers admission, “must have” media for 100 million households. And Newsbeast, eh, not so much.

But all of this focus on bigness, to me, misses a truly interesting point: ESPN’s excellent execution for the small screen.

ESPN’s “mobile web experience” is highlighted in s book Mobile First” is the concept, formulated by Wroblewski, that the best way to think about the design of websites is to consider things first from the mobile point of vieweven if you’re designing a site that will primarily used on the desktop. The reason for this is simpleless pixels=less screen real estate=more focused user experience. Wroblewski thinks the hard choices required to prune all but the most important features make for stronger sites. And, indeed, after they go through the mobile development process, companies often find that their desktop site looks busy, clunky and old by comparison.

Reading about ESPN in Mobile First gave me the idea to talk to Luke Wroblewski and also to Jay Lee, Senior Director of Product Development at ESPN Mobile, about why ESPN is a winner at the small game.

First, it must be said, as much as they have arrived at and practice the principles of mobile first, ESPN didn’t start with mobile. They started out in?1979 with live TV of events, but really took off with the advent of SportsCenter, which added a whole new layer of editorial content to the world of sports and made?Keith Olbermann and Chris Berman household names. From there they have branched out into multiple cable channels in the U.S. and internationally, jordans for cheap, a print magazine and, of course, the web.

The ESPN audience is, in many ways, plasma screen firstwhere the bigness resides. But sports fans, right up there with day traders, are our biggest consumers of constantly updated information. So?ESPN got into mobile early, when the iPhone was just a glimmer in Steve Jobs’ mind. As Jay Lee says, “Across the board in all our properties we know what our fans come to us first for on digital devicesit’s scores.” In the old days, the daily newspaper could satisfy fans with yesterday’s scores. Now they want the scores of their teams, in their games, constantly updated in real time.

To understand how ESPN does this for so many games in so many sports for so many people it’s helpful to survey the media landscape of the sports fan. Jay Lee explains, “We have this mantra at ESPN, best available screen. So we know if you’re at home with a 50 inch flat screen you’re gonna watch the game there.” But beyond the secure certainty of the living room or man cave the device terrain becomes much more uncertain. To hear Luke describe how people use digital devices is to confront how promiscuous our relationship with technology has become,http://www.jordansretroshoescheap.com/, “There are scenarios where the laptop is two feet from you but you have your smartphone in your hand. And it’s not that the smartphone is any better or easier for getting things done, it’s just that it’s there, jordan retro 12, it’s on, so you’re going to do it on that device.” [Imagine a leering Stephen Stills singing, "And if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with..."] Device usage also has to do with time of day. Wroblewski sites studies that show, “smartphone use jump in the morning hours and the desktop dominates during the day and in the evening, people that have tablets, retro jordan shoes, that’s when they’re online.”

Just as we no longer believe that economics is the result of “logical actors” following a narrow set of interests, we can no longer assume we know how people will use their mobile devices. Take video content. Wroblewski points out that now, “YouTube’s fastest growing channel is mobile. They’re doing 400 million daily video views on mobile devices. It’s already 15% of their traffic. So if you look at the things that people generally assume nobody will do on mobile, ‘nobody’s going to watch video, the screen’s too small, the experience is going to be totally crappy.’? And here you have the world’s largest video site saying within a year, the dominant use case will be mobile.”

From TV to desktop to laptop to tablet to smartphone there’s a continuum of devices that fans use to get their fix. But the common denominator, air jordan sale, the quantum of content devices, is the smartphone. And in many ways, the smartphone is a unique execution, because people are using it first for their most mission critical task (like getting their scores) and for getting quick hits of headlines or short bursts of video. But in a pinch, they’ll use it for anything. Wroblewski? about something Mike Krieger of said, “Mobile experiences fill the gaps while we wait. Nobody wants to wait while they wait. Mobile needs to be fast. To make things on mobile feel really fast you need to invest in back-end and front-end designCin design and engineering. Design can be a speed feature.” I wondered how much speed is part of the quality of mobile web experiences in general and for a site like ESPN in particular?

Three times as my Democrats than last year supplemental bill,Jordan 13, that has passed 308-114.

Of the 114 no votes, cheap jordan 3, 102 of them were Democrats. That’s more than triple the number of members of the president’s party (32) that voted against it last year. It also means that more Republicans voted for it (160) than Democrats (148).

The bill contains $37 billion for the war operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. It will be signed by President Obama as soon as is possible.

    AP Hispanic Affairs Writer
MIAMI (AP) — A Republican group that includes former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will use a conference Thursday to kick off its efforts to improve the party’s outreach to Hispanic voters, many of whom have been critical of some GOP candidates’ harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration.
The new Hispanic Action Network is part of a growing number of Republican organizations reaching out to Hispanics in advance of next year’s presidential election — and it has powerful support.
The group is backed by former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, whose American Action Network funneled more than $30 million in campaign funds to Republicans in about 30 congressional races last year.
Republicans don’t need to win a majority of Hispanic votes. But with the Latino population growing in swing states such as Nevada, Colorado and Florida, Republicans need to chip away at Hispanics’ overall 2-1 preference for Democrats.
Democrats say their party’s support comes from their stances on issues such as health care, education and the economy, as well as its response to GOP campaign attacks on illegal immigrants that some say have had a racist undertone.
But Bush and other Republicans have long maintained their party is a natural fit for Hispanics, particularly recent immigrants. They cite the party’s social conservatism, anti-abortion stance and positions in support of private school vouchers and other school choice measures as well as lower taxes.
The two-day conference that starts Thursday evening will cover topics such as trade, immigration, media outreach and education. Among potential Republican candidates for president in 2012, former Minnesota Gov. is a scheduled to speak.
Bush, who met his Mexican-born wife Columba when he taught English in her homeland, said the party needs to be more engaged in the Hispanic community and not just during election campaigns.
« It’s about more than running ads in the Spanish-language media, retro jordan 8, » said Bush, who speaks fluent Spanish. « It’s also about showing people you want them to be part of the effort, putting in the time even when people aren’t looking…it means using rhetoric that doesn’t turn people off. »
House Speaker , a possible 2010 presidential candidate, announced a similar effort in Washington, D.C.,retro jordan 11, last month with his Americanos group. The conservative think tank, , also now has a Spanish Web site, Libertad.org. Meanwhile, Alfonso Aguilar, former President George W. Bush’s first citizenship and immigration czar, now runs the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles.
« We have to move away from Pinata politics, the politics that are focused on popular culture. Here’s the candidate and here’s the mariachis, » Aguilar said.
« We now have a very different Latino community than we had even 20 years ago. Fory percent are foreign-born, and many others are the children of immigrants, » he said. « Because there are more who were born abroad, they tend to be in tune with the conservative cultures of their home countries. »
The former president, who is Jeb Bush’s brother, had a stronger and more successful Hispanic outreach program than almost any other national Republican. He unsuccessfully pushed sweeping immigration reform during his presidency.
Jeb Bush told The Associated Press Tuesday « the more the merrier » as far as outreach programs go. Unlike Gingrich, he says he has ruled out running for president in 2012.
Given his close ties to the Cuban-American community, his work on Latin American trade and his own Mexican-American children, Jeb Bush is widely viewed as one of the few Republicans who could capture a sizable Latino vote in a national race.
The Republican groups need to overcome several obstacles. The immigration rhetoric of some GOP candidates frequently overshadowed other issues during the 2010 election, such as when tea party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharon Angle of Nevada ran ads portraying illegal immigrants as thuggish gang members. In Colorado, Democrat Michael Bennet narrowly won the Senate race last year after Latinos overwhelming backed him over Republican Ken Buck. Buck, jordan retro 11, a former county prosecutor, had tried to deport more illegal immigrants by seizing income-tax returns from accountants that catered to Spanish speakers. The plan was later thrown out by a court.
The House Republican leadership took a symbolic step toward bridging the gap with Latino voters last week in bypassing controversial Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa as the next chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on immigration. King once suggested on the House floor that an electrified border fence would stop illegal immigrants, likening it to the practice used to corral livestock.
Yet so far, the only new Republican proposal on immigration has come from a group of state lawmakers who are looking to trigger a review of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. As currently applied, jordan 6 for sale, it grants automatic citizenship to anyone born in the country, including the children of illegal immigrants. If the court upholds that application, they want Congress and the states to amend the amendment.
Simon Rosenberg, head of the liberal-leaning NDN organization, applauded Republican efforts to reach Latinos.
« It would be bad for the Latino community to only have one political party working with them, » he said. « I think it is very important that Jeb Bush move the party forward. »
But Rosenberg questioned the notion that Hispanics have more in common with conservatives than Democrats. With many Hispanics lacking health insurance, they are more likely to benefit from the Democrats’ recent health care overhaul, which will greatly expand insurance coverage.
He said the GOP needs more than improved outreach.
« There is a reactionary strain in the that is angry about how the country is changing, » he added, referring to the effects of immigration. « We are moving toward a majority nonwhite country. That is very difficult for some people to accept. And those people tend to be more Republican.
« Jeb Bush represents the future of the Republican Party. But he doesn’t represent the present, » Rosenberg said.
Bush and Gingrich support comprehensive immigration reform, but GOP leadership must still satisfy those who want to focus solely on border security, jordan retro shoes, including Florida Gov. , a fan of Arizona-style immigration legislation. That state passed a law last year that requires immigrants to carry papers proving they are in the country legally and requires police officers to check the immigration status of any person they reasonably believe might be in the country illegally. A judge has placed those provisions on hold pending hearings on their constitutionality.
Scott will be among the keynote speakers Thursday night at the conference in the Miami suburb of Coral Gables. Others include the co-chair, former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, as well as Puerto Rican Gov. Luis Fortuno, former Colombian President and Texas Sen. .
Coleman said he’s proud of the diverse perspectives the conference will offer and hopes it leads to serious debate.
« So much of immigration is about tone, » he said. Coleman added that newly elected Florida Republican U.S. Sen. and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez talk about immigration and border security « but in a tone that is helpful and respectful. »
But neither Rubio nor Martinez will be at the conference, nor will newly elected Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. Coleman said both Sandoval and Martinez come from faraway states and have just begun their jobs. Rubio spokesman Alex Burgos said the senator would be working on official business outside of South Florida but declined to release a public schedule for the day.

It may seem like an unlikely tourist destination, but a trip to North Korea may be the next hot ticket for intrepid travelers, with a few groups gaining entrance to this elusive nation. Decades of tension between North Korea and Western powers prompted the Communist nation to effectively close its borders to all but a few select visitors. Now, for the first time since North and South Korea split nearly 60 years ago, a small group of tour operators are offering American travelers an opportunity to explore various pockets of the reclusive nation.

    Travel restrictions
In 2010, many of the heavy restrictions for U.S. tourists entering North Korea were lifted in an effort to boost the country’s ailing economy and improve its image internationally. “Before February 2010, Americans could only travel during the Mass Games, could only stay for four nights, and were charged more,” said Simon Cockerell, general manager of , a Beijing-based company specializing in North Korean tourism. Since then, however, the restrictions have been mostly dropped, states Cockerell, so now Americans and other Westerners can travel in the same groups, pay the same price, stay longer and travel year-round.

But while North Korea is slowly rolling back limitations on tourism, visitor restrictions still apply, and each trip is still controlled by state authorities. Foreigners entering the country must be accompanied at all times by an official guide, who directs their trip and escorts them through each stop and visit. For most visitors, this will be as close as it comes to interacting with the locals, as guests are usually kept separate from ordinary citizens.

“The remaining restrictions are that some of the regional hotels are not permitted to have American guests overnight, and that Americans cannot travel into or out of the country by train,” states Cockerell.

Although movement is limited, there are choices. Pyongyang has nine different hotels to choose from, jordan 2 sale, with meals and shopping available in the hotel or in the local area. Tours create excellent opportunities to interact, with trips to parks, local festivals, and even football matches.

    Technology restrictions
In North Korea, contact with the outside world is forbidden, so visitors are required to leave all cellphones with authorities, but they are returned on departure.

“MP3 players, computers and thumb drives are, in fact, allowed, cheap jordans,” states Cockerell.

Cameras are permitted, but photography should be kept strictly to shots of scenery, landmarks and fellow tourists. The official guides will insist that the locals are made extremely uncomfortable by any interactions with foreigners, and having their photograph taken is no exception.

    Attractions
A trip to North Korea is undoubtedly challenging, jordan retro 9, but rewards abound in the form of impeccable natural beauty and surprisingly impressive feats of human engineering. The sacred volcanic peaks of Mount Baekdu on the Chinese border to the north offer some truly memorable views of pristine crater lakes and lush countryside. Museums lauding various North Korean successes are dotted throughout the major towns and cities, like the Korean War Museum in Pyongyang, which contains a 360-degree, 10-meter-high painting, depicting a scene in which the Korean People’s Army reclaims a village from U.S. forces.

Cockrell says North Korea’s main attraction is actually the country itself. “To just go to North Korea is a singular and fascinating experience. The place is very enigmatic and to get a glimpse of it from the inside is very special, cheap air jordans,” he said.

The recently opened Rason Special Economic Area offers unprecedented opportunities to experience everyday life in North Korea and interact with the locals, by allowing tourists to visit a local market, watch stevedores working in the port and step inside a local bank.

Though the glimpses are brief, they offer a unique and enlightening perspective into the day-to-day lives of ordinary people within this secretive society.

We learned some things about Ortiz. He’s good

    Featured

Saturday night’s fight between Jr. and Victor Ortiz wasn’t supposed to end like that.

Whether you were rooting for an Ortiz upset or looking for Mayweather to extend his undefeated streak, the controversial fourth-round knockout wasn’t the way it was supposed to go down.

Fight fans were supposed to come away from this fight either having seen Ortiz emerge as a legitimate superstar and the future of boxing or knowing that Mayweather, jordan retro 5, long questioned for his choice in opponents, truly is as great as he claims to be (or as close to that as is humanly possible).

Instead of answering questions about Ortiz’s star potential or Mayweather’s invincibility, jordan retro for sale, the bout left fight fans unsatisfied and underwhelmed, spiraling into a debate on cheap shots, rules and Mayweather’s tirade against 80-year-old boxing analyst Larry Merchant.

Fans wanted to see a fight. What they got instead was a spectacle.

There’s no question Mayweather was in control in the earlier rounds, and many observers believed he was clearly en route to a victory. But Ortiz was holding his own. Of course, in boxing, a single well-landed punch by either fighter can change everything.

There’s no debate that Ortiz’s fourth-round head butt was deserving of the deduction referee Joe Cortez gave him. What happened after that is where everything went awry.

It’s hard to find fault with Ortiz apologizing to Mayweather at least the first time. A hug and a kiss and another hug later, however, had the remorse bordering on overkill.

Moments later, as Cortez called for the round to restart, it was over. The two touched gloves and with Cortez’s attention clearly elsewhere and Ortiz apparently unaware the fight had restarted Mayweather landed a pair of punches that put Ortiz down for the count.

The arena and the Twitterverse, jordan air retro 4, for that matter erupted.

Cortez, who bills himself as “firm, but fair,” called the knockout legal. And while most accept that decision, the consensus as to whether the punches were clean is a whole other debate.

Mayweather refused to fully address the situation afterward, explaining it wasn’t about discussing what either fighter did that was dirty. He simply evoked the boxing axiom, “Protect yourself at all times” a saying that went viral after the fight.

Just as the Mayweather-Ortiz fight was unsettling, the debate to how it ended, or should have, ended will never be settled.

We learned some things about Ortiz. He’s good, but he’s definitely got some learning to do. There’s still a level of inexperience with him, although one would hope he makes some big leaps forward on that front following his defeat. At 24, he’s still on the upswing,http://www.lovecheapdesignerbags.com, and still has the potential to become a boxing star.

And the jury’s still out on Mayweather. If he was hoping a win over Ortiz would end the incessant questions about a fight with (as if that were possible), this bout did nothing but stoke that discussion even further.

If Saturday’s bout did anything, it only made the shadow Pacquiao casts over Mayweather’s legacy even more obvious. While Ortiz called for a rematch and Mayweather seemed to indicate he’d give him one, the momentum and enthusiasm has been deflated.

That’s not the kind of resolution boxing fans wanted.

Veteran’s Day: What does it Mean to be a Latino Veteran?

    By

    Published November 11, 2011

    Fox News Latino

Sgt. 1st Class Luis Orengo was deployed in .

To be Hispanic and a Veteran of the Armed Forces of the may seem as a contradiction to many in terms of cultural definition. However, knowing that the United States is a vast melting pot,http://www.cheapjordansforsale2012.com/, it is quite natural.

This is a very tough question as we, Hispanics, have been serving our country since its foundation.

I have never given serious consideration to the term “Veteran”,http://www.jordans11concord.com, as someone with a special status.  However, I have come to realize that Veterans are a special kind of breed in a nation and world that needs real role models. Somehow, I am now a part of it.

    [pullquote]

I uphold my commitment to the nation in a very high esteem. I grew up in the military to accept discipline and challenges and to overcome difficult situations in order to accomplish the mission.  I learned to be fully responsible for my actions and to accept responsibility, to respect those people whose ideas and ideals totally differ from mine. My purpose as a soldier was, and still is, to protect the rights of my fellow citizens even if they disagree.

I have learned to inspire others to perform their duties above and beyond what many civilians consider standards, to take action and never expect anyone to do it for me.  I learned to lead from the front, to show the path and to be flexible enough to deal with any unexpected situation in a successful manner.

As many brothers and sisters-in-arms, I have felt hunger and thirst. I have experienced long sleepless nights and the fear associated with the unknown. I know the sensation of the coldest of winter and the hottest of summer in many parts of this world, and have shed tears for fallen comrades. I am familiar with stress and know that we all serve our country regardless of location; from the thick jungles to the arid deserts; from high above in the sky to the depths of the ocean, and never ask for anything but respect.

I have learned to miss my family and the commodities of life back home,http://www.loveclshoes.com/, and above all I have become grateful of the time and opportunities given to me. I now give thanks for a piece of ice or a plastic spoon, and thank those who give me a simple paper cup of water or others who sit down beside me just to listen.

As a Hispanic and a Puerto Rican, I have felt the nasty sting of racism, the rejection of my views and ideas because of my country of origin or because of the thick Latino accent in my English. I learned very early in my life that ignorance can be dangerous. I also learned to overcome these situations as I did many other challenges, trying to exceed the standards and going beyond of what was expected from me.

I am part of a community of over 3.5 million American citizens who cannot vote for its president because the law states that we are in a territory. However, that same president has sent many of us to fight wars during the last 112 years. More than 500,000 of us have served the nation gallantly with pride. We have four Medal of Honor recipients who died defending the cause of freedom in foreign lands and over 140,000 Veterans still living and hoping that our sacrifice and blood will allow us to have Congressional representation as equals among our brothers from the states in the holy shrine of Democracy.

I enjoy the pride of a job well done, of mission accomplishment and the assurance that my commitment and sacrifice will keep my family and my great nation safe from its enemies, foreign and domestic.  I keep my last names a badge of courage and a sign of pride.  As long as there are United States Armed Forces there will be a Rodriguez, Marzán, Huertas, jordans for sale, Ocasio, Zárate, Zapata, Guillén, Rosario, Santiago, Balladares and many others who will stand for what is correct and will serve the nation with dignity, pride and devotion.

As a Hispanic Veteran I stand by the same principles of all of those who have served our nation alongside me regardless of race, skin color, sexual orientation or religion. I am proud of my service, and am committed in my heart to upholding the greatness of the United States of America and the principles it stands for: Democracy, Justice and Freedom for all.

This story appears in the May 7, 2012 edition of Forbes magazine.

Most readers know that I am an ardent student of market history and a firm believer that it’s prone to repeating itself. So I’m often asked what the current era echoes. My answer: the early 1990s.

Let me set the scene. It was just a few years after 1987’s Black Monday market crash and 1989’s Friday the 13th minicrash. The S&L crisis was making headlines, cheap designer handbags, and Saddam Hussein had invaded Kuwait. The stock market fell hard in 1990, and investors were nervous―a psychosis similar to 2008’s.

Housing had plummeted. More big U.S. banks failed in this period than any other. The media were spreading “debt crisis” dogma everywhere. Go back and read the clips: It was all debt doom, all the time.

Then, too, the pre-euro nations were struggling under heavy fiscal ?restraint preparing for the euro convergence. PIIGS as an acronym didn’t exist then, but their problems did. Their net interest payments on sovereign debt as a percent of GDP were fully twice today’s paranoid levels. Greece suspended payments on its long-term debt into mid-1993, and by that year Europe was in minor ?recession. A global downturn was being predicted. Sound familiar?

Back then there was an unpopular U.S. President, jordan retro 3, George H.W. Bush. He was seeking reelection against an expanding economy few believed in. beat him with an “It’s the economy, stupid” campaign. Congress was in opposition hands.

In 1992 world stocks were down after a big 1991. I equate 1992 to 2011’s poor global performance after a strong 2009 and 2010. The next year, jordan xi concord, 1993, was the beginning of a new era politically and from a markets perspective.

The parallels aren’t perfect, but they are evident and plentiful. Caution! In no way am I predicting another raging bull market like the 1990s’. Don’t ?mortgage your house to buy stocks. However, remember few saw how ?optimal the environment ?really was back then. I think times are similar, and it’s a good time to buy, ?selectively. Here are several stocks.

Let’s face it, everybody wants a tractor. Even my wife, ralph lauren sale, and she never wants anything. Put yours on one; she’ll be ecstatic. Then let her go shopping with the grandson at a Tractor Supply (, 98) store.

The Brentwood, jordan retro 11 concord, Tenn. company is America’s largest retailer for small-time farmers and ranchers (not the industrial or commercial market, which is dominated by companies like John Deere). They sell things like “zero turn” riding mowers, fashionable ?cowboy boots and horse-grooming supplies. You can visit a store to buy an outfit or drive a small tractor.

I see the earth moving under this stock. It’s at 17 times my estimate of 2012 earnings.

Here’s an incredible fact: The average parent in the U.S. spends more on pets than on their child’s K12 education. We love our pets, and the undisputed leader in selling us things for them is ’s PetSmart (, 56). Its 1,232 stores sell everything from cat chow to chicken coops―and services from grooming and boarding to training. At 15 times my estimate of January 2013 earnings and one times revenue it will climb a lot higher before this bull market ends.

The central government and the Kurdish region have long-running disputes over political autonomy, cheap jordan 7, oil rights and contested territories, cheap replica designer handbags, and ties have been further strained by a recent clash over oil exports.

Sadr, a Shia cleric who led uprisings against the US before American forces withdrew last December, is an influential player in government after his bloc’s support of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki helped secure al-Maliki’s position.

On his first visit to the Kurdish region, Sadr called for dialogue between all government factions and presented 18 points,Cheap Jordan 12, including one on oil,http://www.hotchristianlouboutinsales.com/, on which he said all parties needed to agree. "The oil of Iraq is for the people and no one has a right to claim it for himself," he said.

Ties between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Baghdad were strained last October when US oil giant Exxon Mobil signed a deal to develop oilfields in the north, jordan 11 concord, an agreement the central government deemed illegal because it says it has control over Iraq’s oil exports.

The rift between Erbil and Baghdad widened further this month when the KRG said it was halting oil exports from the region because companies operating there were not being paid by Baghdad.

How Tigers Coach Can Help You Overcome Presentatio

    Featured

“First tee jitters” are the nerves that strike many golfers as they get ready to take their first swing in front of friends or a gallery. After reading The Big Miss, Hank Haney’s bestselling book about his years coaching ,cheap jordan, I learned that even the greatest golfers in the world battle with nerves. The best golfers don’t necessarily conquer nerves as much as they control nerves by focusing on success and practicing the toughest shots they might encounter on the course.

I realize that hitting a driver consistently more than 300 yards down the middle of a fairway or making bunker saves look easy requires hours and hours of practice. But one story in Haney’s book amazed me. Haney had to miss one of Tiger’s tournaments due to an illness in Haney’s family. Tiger called Haney after the third round and asked him for advice on his swing. Haney told him to correct just one thing and suggested that Tiger practice the move in front of the mirror. Tiger practiced alright. He practiced the one move in front of a mirror for two hours before going to bed. He woke up at 2:30 am on the day of the tournament and practiced even more, jordan 4 sale, for a total of four-and-a-half hours, christian louboutin sale! In the final round, Tiger won by three strokes.

What does this have to do with public speaking and presentation skills? We all know that the fear of public speaking strikes the majority of us and, in many people, raises a serious obstacle to career advancement and their ability to lead. But I believe people are way too hard on themselves. If you don’t practice your presentation―and I mean practice for hours and hours, jordans xi, then why would you expect to be calm on the day of the presentation? A professional golfer would never think of starting a tournament without having put in hours and hours of practice. Practice reduces the element of surprise. If a golfer knows he’s nailed a particular shot hundreds of times on the range, jordans 11, he’ll be more confident standing over the ball when it counts.

Professional golfers sharpen their craft by practicing ten hours a day. When is the last time you spent ten hours total rehearsing a client presentation? Rehearsing your presentation will build your confidence and reduce those ‘first tee jitters’ you might feel when you first face your audience.

Shanna Moakler, replica designer handbags, Former Miss Universe Brook Lee Rally for Anti-Prop 8 Ad Campaign

    ByHollieMcKay

, former Miss USA and current co-executive director of the Miss California pageant has made it very clear how she was when her candidate voiced that she believed « marriage should be between a man and a woman » at the Miss USA pageant last weekend.

But this time it is Moakler who is standing up for what she believes in — the right for gay and lesbian couples to marry. Pop Tarts was exclusively on-set in North on Tuesday evening as the reality starlet and the co-executive state pageant director brought together Miss California and Miss USA 2006 first runner-up Tamiko Nash and last year’s Miss California Raquel Beezley to shoot a in the hope of raising awareness and eventually having Proposition 8 over-turned in California.

The campaign was started in November last year by photographer Adam Bouska and so far almost 400 people have shot the trademark image of an individual on a white backdrop with duct tape over their mouth. (But of course when it is three former sash sisters under the lights and camera, three sparkling tiaras are also a necessity).

« It’s important for us right now to participate in this, especially given the conversation surrounding Miss California. We’re here showing we’re a family, we agree to disagree and support our beliefs, » Lewis told Tarts, as Moakler (who was in the make-up chair) nodded in agreement. « It’s been a difficult time but we want to show that there are a lot of different families, I was raised by a single mom, and I am dad to two children that are being raised by two moms. Can’t we all just love each other and get along and celebrate the fact that people are able to find true love? »

But contact with Carrie Prejean since the now infamous incident went down is still questionable.

« We are working through it; we’re a family in resolution. We really want to give Carrie an opportunity to express her beliefs, the Miss California system is about empowering women to be strong and independent and stand up for whatever they believe in, » Lewis said. « So as soon as Carrie is done explaining her beliefs we really look forward to her coming back to our platform. I’m proud that she was able to stand there and utter whatever it was that came out of her mouth. I’m a 45-year-old man and I don’t think I could explain myself to millions of people. »

However the pageant controversy has made Lewis learn even more about his own convictions too.

« I was raised Christian and I struggled with it my whole life, I think a lot of people struggle with the Bible and homosexuality, » he added. « But the Bible I have now come to know is an amazing historical document that was written in a time by people who had a different understanding of what our world was. We live in a world that’s very different at this point, christian louboutin shoes on sale, our understanding is very different. »

1997’s Miss Hawaii-turned Miss USA-turned Miss Universe, Brook Lee, also shot for the ad and took on a « Prejean Pageant » inspired theme by donning a white evening gown and sash that said « Miss Equality. »

« Being a former Miss Universe I was at Miss USA last week, I was there when everything went down and experienced the blow-back afterwards. People were really shaken up, » Lee told Tarts. « When I came back to L.A. it was prevalent in everyone’s mind and I wanted to do this campaign because a visual image lasts so much longer than words. I also brought my two-year-son to do it, activism stars early. My husband was here with us and he shot too. »

And although the stunning pageant princess acknowledged that « everyone is entitled to their own opinion », she believes Carrie definitely did not deserve the coveted crown of Miss USA.

« The judges I spoke to said they applaud her for being so vocal, but she didn’t answer the question, she wasn’t consistent. They didn’t mark her down because they are some liberal majority and were trying to punish her for her Christian values, » she explained. « But for her to go in the press and say she lost the crown because of her answer is playing with the truth. I heard she’s saying she wants to run for office now? Maybe she’ll team up with Palin. »

Even «  » winner Reichen Lehmkuhl stopped by the studio to be snapped.

« We feel Proposition 8 takes away the equal rights for an entire group of people who are tax-payers and important people in society and one of those people happens to be me, » he said. « I am here to support against a campaign that I feel is a campaign of hate. We just want equal rights; we don’t think we’re morally superior. »

Paris and Nicky Hilton hit the headlines late last year when they were flown Down Under to host a New Year’s Eve bash to launch a new mobile-based online community, Bongo Virus. The hotel heiresses reportedly earned almost $1 million between them to show up at the party for a couple of hours and be brand ambassadors for a day, cheap jordan 2, but while the girls got their money it turns out that their parent company, CommQuest, is now going broke.

After paying the Hilton’s a million to party and prance around for a week, the Bongo business was recently sold for just $1.69 million, representing an earnings multiple of less than 2 and for obvious reasons the investors are hopping mad.

    prepared like a beef bourguignon.

There is a snack that chef Marcel Vigneron can’t wait to put into Will Farrell’s mouth. It is called “The Dragon’s Breath”, a puffed wild rice tablet frozen in liquid nitrogen that causes smoke to billow out of the diner’s mouth as it cools on their tongue.

“I just think Will will get a huge kick out of it,” alumna Vigneron, said of his creation. He will be serving it to Farrell during a dinner party at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend.

The well-known independent film festival is more than just movies and celebrity schmoozing. In years past it has become known as a destination for celebrity chefs to showcase their talents at exclusive dinners for the A-list. When the screens go dark, these culinary geniuses are cooking up their take on comfort food by the fireside.

Vigneron, a famed molecular gastronomist, will host three dinners during this week’s festival, cooking for such celebrities as Farrell and Zach Galifinakis, , , , Liev  Schreiber and Peter Saarsgard at the Moroccanoil Supper Suite at the Montage resort in Deer Valley, Utah — the town adjacent to Park City where the festival is headquartered.

“The inspiration for the menu is a lot of comfort food but also things that are fun and interesting that maybe these people haven’t seen before,” Vigneron told us. “I love the movies of the people I am going to be cooking for. I feel like I enjoy the fruits of their labors all the time and now it is nice to be able to return that favor.”

One of Vigneron’s dishes will be a braised lamb neck, prepared like a beef bourguignon.

He will serve the cozy dish on top of a bed of noodles made entirely out of Johndrow Vineyards wine.

“There will be no gluten involved. The noodles will be entirely made from wine. I am using two hydro-coolants to prepare them, cheap jordan 6,” Vigneron told us. “The first takes the wine from a liquid to a solid to make a firm jelly to make sure that it is heat stable. The second will give it a flexible elasticity and texture so that it will take on the feel of a noodle with an al dente bite.”

Judge Donatella Arpaia is taking comfort food at the Festival up an additional notch. Arpaia is part of ChefDance, an event that brings together a crew of chefs for five nights next week to prepare four course meals for VIPS like and .

Arpaia, who has never been to the Sundance festival before can hardly contain her excitement at being part if the event, but she admits she is a little bit nervous (in a good way) about cooking for so many famous faces.

“There is always a tendency for chefs to try to overdo it and get a little crazy at events like this. That works for some people, but I like to stick to rustic Italian dishes and dress it up a couple of notches,” Arpaia said. “Plus all these actresses have probably been starving to get into their dresses so they will be hungry anyway.”

Arpaia is preparing a red wine braised short rib with roasted brussel sprouts. “It’s cold. I needed something hearty and warm, buy jordans,” Arpaia said. Chef Hung Huynh from New York City’s CATCH restaurant will be bringing his seafood delicacies to the middle of the country at Late Night events at the Bing Bar.

“Utah isn’t exactly known for seafood, cheap replica designer handbags,” Huynh laughed. “I will be serving some lighter and healthier fare that we feature at Catch. “I don’t like to cook what looks great but tastes like crap. It is much harder to make simple food taste good than if you are working with truffles and caviar.”

Huynh will be making a salmon carpaccio with yuzu and soy, cheap jordan 7, seared scallops with a tamarind brown butter and roasted cauliflower and a Halibut slow poached in olive oil and served with provencal vegeatables.” As for cooking for celebrities Huynh just says, “whatever.”

“They still need to be fed. They’re just like regular people, polo ralph lauren cheap,” Huynh said. “I just want to serve them good food.”

we were able to do that by being aggressive. »

    Featured

MIAMI (AP) LeBron James dropped to the floor holding the back of his head, grimacing and then staggering a bit when he reached his feet.

A few moments later, he was fine.

And a few moments after that, the Miami Heat had complete control of Game 1 against the New York Knicks.

James scored 32 points after shooting 10 for 14 from the field, and the Heat rode the strength of what became a 32-2 run to easily beat the Knicks 100-67 on Saturday, striking first in the series between clubs that waged classic annual battles from 1997 through 2000 and are meeting for the first time since.

Dwyane Wade added 19 points in his first game back after dislocating his left index finger.

« Our guys had a noticeable look in their eyes the last 24 hours, » Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. « We wanted to get back to the basics and play to our identity. For the most part,Buy Jordans, we were able to do that by being aggressive. »

No, this wasn’t redemption for falling short in last season’s finals.

But for James and the Heat, it sure was a fine start.

« I’m a different player this year, a different person this year compared to last year, » James said. « I’ve waited to get back to the postseason, prepared myself all season, throughout the offseason to get back to this point. »

It was physical, it was heated – and it was one-sided. New York’s 67 points matched a franchise playoff low.

Mario Chalmers finished with 11 points and nine assists for Miami, which turned 27 New York turnovers into a franchise playoff-record 38 points. The Knicks were called for 21 fouls in the first half, Miami enjoying a 28-5 advantage in free throws attempted in the first 24 minutes alone, and center Tyson Chandler sent James flying with what was called a flagrant foul as the Heat were blowing the game open.

J.R. Smith scored 17 for the Knicks, who lost Iman Shumpert to a torn knee ligament and have dropped 11 straight playoff games dating back to 2001. Carmelo Anthony missed 12 of 15 shots and finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Baron Davis added 10 points for New York.

It was the worst playoff loss for the Knicks since a 126-85 defeat at Chicago on April 25, 1991.

« This series is not over, » Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire said. « We’ve got to learn from our mistakes today and get ready for Monday. »

The series isn’t, but Shumpert’s is. The Knicks said the rookie guard also tore a lateral meniscus and would miss approximately six to eight months. Even before an MRI at a hospital, Anthony said what was obvious to anyone who saw Shumpert take a non-contact tumble in the third quarter.

« We know Shump is not going to be with us, » Anthony said.

Maybe it was ironic that this game took a turn when someone who helped doom Miami in last season’s finals sent the two-time MVP flying.

Chandler – who helped Dallas win the 2011 title over Miami – set a back pick near midcourt with 1:34 left in the half, and James never saw it coming. The original call was a flagrant-2 against Chandler, which would have meant an automatic ejection. After review, it was downgraded to a flagrant-1, so Chandler could stick around for the rest of the debacle.

Given that he spent Friday and Saturday fighting the flu, Chandler would have probably rather left anyway.

« They played really well, » Knicks coach Mike Woodson said, « and we played awful. »

An awful 9 minutes for the Knicks decided this one.

After all, this is a Heat-Knicks playoff series. It’s almost required to have emotions boil over.

With Jeff Van Gundy and Alonzo Mourning in the building – remember, the former Knicks coach once tugged on the Heat center’s leg during one memorable Miami-New York playoff dustup – along with Knicks assistant general manager Allan Houston, he of the game-winner to eliminate the Heat from the last playoffs following a lockout-shortened season of 1999, things got heated once again.

There were early hints that tensions were high, like Stoudemire and Udonis Haslem getting double-technicals after jawing back and forth with 4:10 left in the opening quarter. A few minutes later, after Shane Battier committed a hard foul on Anthony – who missed his first seven shots – Davis ran about 50 feet to give Battier a light shove.

That was all little stuff, compared to what was coming. Said Woodson: « All hell broke loose. »

Mike Miller’s 3-pointer with 2:22 left in the half capped a run of 13 straight points by the Heat, and they were just getting started.

After making both free throws awarded for the Chandler foul, James banked in a 20-footer from the left wing while getting hit by Smith 10 seconds later for what became a five-point possession for Miami.

« I thought it was a legal pick, honestly, » Chandler said.

And James still wasn’t done, first hitting a fadeaway with 48 seconds left, ralph lauren sale, then a layup while getting hit by Jared Jeffries with 3 seconds left in the half.

« Spectacular, » Spoelstra said of James’ flurry. « His play spoke for itself. It seemed on both ends of the court he had his hands on every single play, in some form or another. »

The run then was 24-2. The lead was 54-31. For good measure, the Heat scored the first eight points of the third quarter as well, making it 62-31.

« Very eager to start this series off right, » Heat forward Chris Bosh said.

A bad day got even worse for the Knicks midway through the third.

Shumpert – who started the final 17 games of the regular season after Jeremy Lin had knee surgery – was carried off the court by teammates after going down in almost the exact spot as where the Chandler-James collision took place.

Shumpert was bringing the ball up the right sideline and tried to dribble behind his back when he pulled up and immediately grabbed at his left knee. He was brought into the Knicks’ locker room for evaluation, christian louboutin shoes sale, and as he was lifted from the floor Anthony looked at the scoreboard, shaking his head in disbelief.

Absolutely everything was going Miami’s way.

« We’re just trying to play our game, retro jordan 4, » Wade said, « trying to come out and take care of business. »

James provided the exclamation point with 1.4 seconds left in the third quarter.

He made a 3-pointer over Anthony, christian louboutin shoes for sale, and then got the fourth quarter off. Through three quarters, the entire Knicks roster had only outscored James by 15, and Miami took an 81-47 lead into the final 12 minutes.

« I think the Miami Heat right now are feeling great about their performance, » Stoudemire said. « Which they should. »

NOTES: The 33-point victory margin was the second-largest in Heat history. … Toney Douglas (virus) was inactive for the Knicks. … Lin had a lengthy shooting workout before the game. … All fans sitting courtside were to receive a version of the Nike sneakers James is wearing in this year’s playoffs. … Woodson was captured by television cameras before the game telling his team in a huddle, « It is a process to win an NBA title. »

    making it a one-possession game

    Featured

I’ve been virtually every chance I get, and I’ll keep saying until—I don’t know, but there’s no stopping me now!

is the best crunch-time player in the today. (Yeah, I put it in bold.) And his sublime fourth-quarter performance in Game 1 of L.A.’s first-round series against the further reiterated my claim.

It starts with his leadership and attitude, infectious qualities which carry over to his teammates.

Forget basketball players, few human beings are as competitive as CP3. He refused to quit in last night’s game, even when the fell behind by 24 points—with the margin heading the wrong way too—with a mere eight minutes left in the final frame.

Even after seeing what happened to —who stayed in a game that seemed to be already decided—Paul, a guy who’s only two years removed from his owndebilitatingknee injury, implored his coach to remain in the game and have one final crack at making it a contest.

And did he ever. Paul orchestrated one of the greatest comebacks in NBA postseason history, leading the Clippers on a 28-3 run to finish the game en route to a reality-defying one-point win in Memphis.

Along the way, CP3 proved once more why there’s no one better to lead a club in the clutch.

Normally this season, Paul’s crunch-time MO has been to take over games himself, ranking in the top five in the league in clutch scoring. In Game 1, though, he realized that his teammates were ready to share the load.

Paul, who was also in the top 10 in the NBA in clutch assists, assisted on six of LA’s nine non-Paul baskets. He scored or assisted on 20 of the Clippers’ last 28 points.

During those unbelievable eight minutes, the Clippers scored those 28 points on just 18 possessions. And in the 13 possessions they had in which Paul created the action, they scored 22 points. That’s an absurd rate of 169 points per 100 possessions.

I know, it’s a ridiculously small sample size and an unsustainable pace, cheap jordan shoes, but you wouldn’t think a team could sustain it for an eight-minute stretch in the fourth quarter either.

    In a playoff game.

    On the road.

Paul is the only player who could have accomplished that feat, and he has been responsible for that kind of ludicrous efficiency during crunch-time all season long.

It wasn’t just the bottom-line numbers that stood out—80 percent shooting from the field and three for the Clippers over the final eight minutes—it was the little things Paul did that no one else in the league could do.

For one, he turned Reggie-Freaking-Evans into a viable threat off the pick-and-roll, assisting on two Evans layups—one of them an and-one which resulted in an extra two points for the Clips after Blake Griffin put back the missed free-throw and the other giving LA their first lead of the entire game in the final minute.

With the Clippers down 12 and just over three minutes to play, the Clippers had a brief run-out following a Memphis miss. Eric Bledsoe panicked in transition and tried to get Paul the basketball near mid-court. A Grizzlies defender had a beat on the pass and was ready to pick it off and take it the other way.

In a split-second, Paul diagnosed the entire situation. He knew that no matter what he did it would result in a turnover. So he made the best of it and did what was best for his team.

Instead of giving up on the bad pass and allowing the Grizzlies a four-on-three fast break with the Clippers caught sprinting the wrong way, jordan 11, Paul snatched the ball out of the defender’s grasp and walked with it.

It was still a turnover—and would now go down in the box score as Paul’s turnover—but it stopped play, keeping Memphis from having a huge advantage on the fast break and giving the Clippers a chance to set up their defense and grind out another stop.

    Which they did.

When do you ever see a player commit a smartturnover? Only CP3.

The Grizzlies could have gotten an easy transition basket, got their crowd back into the game and completely turned the momentum around in their favor. Instead, the Clippers kept their momentum, and followed that play up with three consecutive Nick Young three-pointers—all of which were assisted by Paul—which cut the lead to three.

Paul showed his singular genius yet again on the final Young three-pointer.

Down six, polo ralph lauren cheap, with under two minutes remaining, the Clippers had a fast break opportunity. The basketball was in Paul’s hands. He had Griffin, dunk master and the best lob finisher in the game sprinting hard to the basket against a smaller defender looking for the alley-oop.Filling the other lane was Young, who was sauntering over to the same corner he had just drilled a second straight three from.

Paul processed all of this information in less than two seconds while dribbling full speed down the court. He deciphered the code and decided to bypass the obvious lob to Griffin—let’s face it,christian louboutin outlet, everyone thought it was coming when they saw Blake making a beeline for the hoop—and instead fed the hot hand in the corner.

Paul’s decision was rewarded with a third consecutive Young triple, making it a one-possession game (instead of still being two possessions had they converted the alley-oop) and silencing the Memphis crowd.

Finally, on the team’s final possession, polo ralph lauren sale, Paul took matters into his own hands. He drew a foul and stepped up to the line, calmly sinking the game-winning free throws with under 24 seconds to play.

Nobody, I repeat, nobodyin the entire league could have made all that happen the way Paul did. It just goes to show how money CP3 is in the clutch.

    The ACLU claims

    Featured

Prison officials in South Carolina are standing firm against calls from the ACLU to allow inmates access to publications with sexual images, saying such magazines would encourage “deviant behavior. »

The American Civil Liberties Union said it filed a lawsuit in October 2010,cheap jordan 13, claiming that the Berkeley County Detention Center in Moncks Corner, S.C.,cheap replica designer handbags, only allowed its inmates to read the Bible.

The debate started when Prison Legal News, a newspaper providing information and news regarding prisons, cheap christian louboutins, was not distributed to inmates. The prison said its decision was due to the publication’s use of staples and racy advertisements.

Sandy Senn, an attorney representing the detention center, told FoxNews.com that Prison Legal News contained « repugnant » advertisements, including a « nude female with stars on her breasts » soliciting inmates to buy porn.

The ACLU says that not only did the jail prevent Prison Legal News, it only allowed « paperback Bibles » in their facility and  filed a motion filed May 3, 2011, stating that the jail “cannot constitutionally ban all publications that sometimes show men and women wearing underwear or dressed for the beach. »

The ACLU claims  it is not suggesting that jails must permit pornography, only that their policies regarding which material is acceptable and which is not should be reexamined. The accusation that the ACLU is “trying to allow pornography into the jail is patently false and an outright fabrication,” Will Matthews, a spokesman for the ACLU told FoxNews.com.

When asked if  the ACLU was pushing to allow, for example, the Victoria’s Secret catalog or more provocative men’s magazines like Maxim or Playboy, jordan retro 3,  Matthews said that they are only referring to Prison Legal News.

However, the wording of the ACLU’s proposed injunction order against the jail is broad and does not state Prison Legal News anywhere in the document.

The lawsuit has outraged prison officials who say this could open the door to pornographic material allowed in prisons..

Senn says that the ACLU’s injunction was « inappropriate » and claimed it would “subject officers to a hostile environment,” by provoking assaults and other criminal behavior in a prison that has many female correction officers.

Senn denied that the prison only allowed Bibles, saying it allowed in all religious text and a variety of reading material so long as they do not contain staples or questionable subjects such as « bomb-making or anarchy. »

She stood behind the prison’s current policy that all reading material first be inspected and « nothing above Maxim » is allowed in. When commenting on which sort of publications could be deemed as inappropriate or even pornographic — specifically Macy’s or Victoria’s Secret catalogs featuring swimwear — Senn said, « I know it when I see it. »

She said changing that policy would provide inmates with materials bound by staples, paper clips or clasps, air jordan for cheap, saying they could be used as weapons.

A preliminary hearing on the matter is expected to take place next month, KABC-TV reports.

and I listen for it when I’m shooting

    Featured

Have you ever flipped through a magazine or browsed the web and salivated over the images of food: That glistening strawberry that looks so good you can practically smell its summery deliciousness; that sizzling steak that’s so juicy, you’d swear it was dribbling off the page; that action shot of a chef effortlessly doing a one-handed flip of veggies sautéing in a pan.

Food photography (or food porn as it’s deemed in this age of Food Network plate-ogling) can make you hungry with a mere glance.  But it’s not easy to get things looking so appetizing and alluring. It takes a ton of skill, timing, artistry, and even some house hold items you should never put in your mouth.

“We have to make those tastes and smells turn on through a picture,” says professional food photographer. “We have to think how to visually stimulate the taste buds and nose through the eyes. We want your eyes to make your mouth water” How do they do it? Here’s a little snapshot:

Shine On A shiny apple. A glistening leaf of lettuce. A juicy, fresh peach. While nature certainly has provided us with some beautiful edibles, the fact is they don’t always look like that in pictures. “Most veggies like tomatoes or peppers are ever so lightly covered with Vaseline and the just lightly wiped off. This gives it a great finish to get a beautiful highlight, and also makes water bead really well by just using a little spritz from a small spray bottle.” Another trick Davis uses? Flicking the bristles of a toothbrush across the Vaseline to give it a faux-fresh,jordan 4, water-beaded texture.

Difficult Dishes How does a photographer make something unappetizing look irresistible? “I try to always work with a great food stylist. They are great resources for helping figure out what is the best way to deal with a particularly difficult food. One that I always find difficult is stews and boiled foods. They just don’t seem to have the best texture and colors,http://www.lovecheapdesignerbags.com,” says Davis. “I deal with it by using lots of undercooked veggies, and meat that is just seared, and maybe colored with shoe polish or Marmite so it looks freshly charred on the outside. It’s also good to have extra ingredients on set to change things out.”

The Light Fantastic Perfect light doesn’t just happen; the pros employ a whole bag of tricks to illuminate the subject just right. “It’s tricky and I love natural light, but most of the time in a restaurant it’s just not enough. Or it’s too harsh. Or it comes from three different kinds of sources, leaving part of your subject blue, part mauve, which is not very flattering. In a kitchen, it’s almost always nonexistent,” says food writer and photographer .  “So, you bring a little toolbox. Diffusers will soften harsh light. Reflectors bounce it back at the subject so keep it from having too much contrast. Your own flash will put light right where you want it or fill in just a little bit where you need it. A tripod and a shutter release cable help keep the camera still and your shots crisply focused.”

Running Hot and Cold  How do make something look hot and sizzling when it’s not, or frosty-cold when it’s warm? First, the background makes a difference. For steam or smoke to appear on the page, christian louboutin uk,  the subject (or in this case the food) must be lit from the back or side in order for the vapors to show up,jordan xi, offers Davis. You also need to use a darker background, jordan 3 sale, because it becomes camouflage if the backdrop is white. Another trick he employs? Calcium turnings –which is an old special effect trick. “They’re poison! But when you add water to one, it will smoke. But you cannot eat the drink or food after that has been put on it.” A less dangerous method he employs: Modifying an old espresso machine steamer with a little extra hose to direct the steam where you need it. As for adding a chill, “Hair spray is a good one for giving things the appearance of a little frost on it.”

Getting in the Action Without Getting Burned Shooting in kitchens and restaurants can not only be tricky, it can be downright dangerous. How do you get in the action without getting in the way? “Restaurant kitchens are some of the trickiest possible settings to shoot in, but they’re also pretty thrilling. Having worked in about a dozen kitchens helps a lot,” laughs Ray. “I look around and find nearby spots to keep my gear handy but out of the staff’s way. You must always say, ‘Behind you!’ when you go behind someone, and I listen for it when I’m shooting, too — you don’t want to learn that one the hard way. You’ve definitely got to watch out for hot surfaces, open flames, and knives.” Still, says Ray, if you can err on the side of savvy caution, restaurant kitchens are filled with oddball details that make for great photographic moments. “There’s usually some fun detail to capture: a tray full of beautiful meringues waiting to be part of a bigger dessert, an incredibly old and still functioning telephone, a « Do Not Touch » sign in the walk-in with a hand-drawn skull and crossbones.”

    Cinema Verite

Adam Wakeling’s film was about a good idea dying for lack of sunlight. "You have got to learn from what the forest is doing," said Hands, who’s spent well over 20 years studying the problem of slash-and-burn farming and trying to come up with a better way for subsistence farmers to make ends meet. His solution is what you might call Rainforest 2.1,Retro Jordan Shoes, a system called alley cropping, in which food crops are planted between rows of inga trees, which themselves provide firewood, fertiliser and, at the right point, enough shade to choke out competing weeds. Hands knows it works, but his problem is convincing people like Aladino – a Honduran subsistence farmer – that it’s better than torching a section of rainforest and then moving on to a new patch when that one is exhausted.

"If you knew what’s really going on with malaria and you didn’t do anything about it… you would be bloody culpable," Hands said, explaining the dogged persistence he’s brought to his cause. And it was about here that you wondered whether Up in Smoke had told you everything you needed to know about alley cropping. "It’ll grow like a virus," Hands said of his technique. But if that was true why hadn’t it done so already and why did he need to monitor his guinea pigs so carefully? Viruses don’t usually wait on government funding before they start to spread, and that should be true of viral ideas too. A line in the script about how Aladino had needed a good crop "to fund the changeover" hinted at one possible answer to the puzzle. If you’re a subsistence farmer any method that takes a year or two to bed in before it delivers results may be as unreachable as the moon.

Not all deforestation is bad, as you’d know if you lived next door to an out-of-control leylandii. Hedge Wars, Nick O’Dwyer’s film about "the plant which ate suburbia", visited several people who longed to hear the friendly sound of a blatting chainsaw, letting sunshine and sky back into their lives. Apparently, the leylandii is the result of a botanical affair on a British estate between two American conifers that would never normally have met. Nobody yet knows how tall their illegitimate children will actually grow, only that they do it at a prodigious rate if left alone. Victims here included the residents of a block of flats, jordan 4 retro, living in sepulchral darkness because of an overgrown vicarage hedge (the diocese declined to comment but did not appear to be behaving in a very Christian manner) and the residents of a Barry cul-de-sac who couldn’t agree on who should pay for a trim. There was also one satisfied customer, cheap jordan 6, a jolly Keighley nudist who keeps his leylandii on a tight rein to provide a modesty screen. His neighbours have no complaints.

Cinema Verite, HBO’s drama about the making of pioneering reality documentary An American Family was a good idea poorly executed. James Gandolfini played Craig Gilbert, who came up with the idea of putting a camera crew in the Santa Barbara home of the Loud family in 1971,jordan 6 for sale, after making a documentary about the anthropologist Margaret Mead. The studio bosses were sceptical but Gilbert knew there was drama behind the suburban ordinariness and, jordan shoes sale, according to this reading, wasn’t over-scrupulous about how to bring it into the open. They’d found good matches for the original participants, and there was a certain fascination in watching the segues between documentary artifice and artificial documentary. But the script was so clunky it virtually came with visible bullet points. The Louds reportedly received a cash settlement to keep their disgruntlement about the drama to themselves – and Gilbert disputed its account of events – which seemed more telling about television’s corrosive power than anything in the drama itself.

Major General Robert Mood, who will oversee the 300 observers the UN has authorised for deployment, admitted the team faced a daunting task ahead because the ceasefire lay in tatters in parts of the country.

The veteran Norwegian peacekeeper called for both sides to lay down their weapons. "Thirty unarmed observers, 300 unarmed observers, air jordans for sale, even 1,000 unarmed observers cannot solve all the problems," he said. "I call on everyone to help us and co-operate with us in this very challenging task ahead."

Maj-Gen Mood, 53, arrives amid growing doubts about the viability of the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s six-point peace plan while the Syrian army continues its relentless campaign of violence and rebels step up attacks on President Bashar al-Assad’s security forces.

Frustrations with the UN are increasingly voiced in daily protests across Syria, with a sign at a recent rally in Hama reading: "Special offer: collect 1,200 martyrs and get 30 monitors in return."

At least 18 people were killed across the country yesterday, according to the Local Co-ordination Committees. Half of those were reported to have been killed in Hama province, where a local activist, Mousab Alhamadee, told The Independent that heavy shelling had begun in the early hours of the morning.

The Syrian regime is becoming openly hostile towards the UN mission, adding to doubts about the future of Mr Annan’s plan. On Saturday, state media accused the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, of making "outrageous" comments about the conflict and derided him as being biased. The UN has criticised both sides for breaking the ceasefire, but has said the Syrian government’s violations outweigh those of the rebels. Teams of two or three observers have been placed in the trouble spots of Homs, Hama, Idlib and Deraa. While the violence appears to have tapered off slightly, jordan 4 sale, there are still regular street battles and bombardments.

The UN has stressed that it is imperative that monitors are deployed as rapidly as possible, before the ceasefire collapses altogether, but just 16 of the advance team of 30 were on the ground yesterday. The UN has given no explanation for the excruciatingly slow progress of the deployment, cheap designer bags, but the Syrian government has rejected some appointments, saying it will not accept monitors from any countries in the "Friends of Syria" group. Ahmad Fawzi, a spokesman for Mr Annan, said he expected the full advance team to be in place by the end of today.

Analysts have long written off Mr Annan’s plan as doomed to fail but, with few diplomatic options on the table, jordan retro 13, the international community has been pushing on with it, regardless of the flagrant violations on both sides.

A further bomb blast rocked Damascus yesterday, after five on Friday, raising concerns that the conflict will increasingly turn into a guerrilla-style insurgency as rebels,Jordan 13, poorly equipped compared with the regime’s troops, use any means possible to hit back.

Because I am a horrible flincher, contact lenses are not an option. I’m always envious of contact-wearers. Food deserts an additional hurdle for Type 2 diabe

    Featured

Rhonda Moore has her health back.

Diagnosed with Type 2 in 2009, Moore, 58, has reduced her blood glucose levels significantly through and daily exercise. But a lack of supermarkets in her North neighborhood makes it difficult to maintain a nutritious diet — a crucial ingredient in controlling the disease.

« In North Chicago, there are no grocery stores, » said Moore, 58. « Buses don’t run on weekends. Cabs are expensive. I try to stock up on frozen things. I’d prefer to eat more salads and such, but you can’t buy in bulk. It lasts only so long. »

Others with Type 2 diabetes face similar hurdles in a number of Chicago neighborhoods and suburban pockets, so-called food deserts where supermarkets are a rarity. In Chicago, the problem persists largely in predominantly African-American neighborhoods on the South and West sides, where access to grocery stores, farmers markets or other vendors selling fresh, high-quality, affordable food is either limited or nonexistent.

« Think what it takes to get back and forth to a grocery store: public transportation, relying on a bus with all those bags, » said Monica E. Peek, an assistant professor of medicine at the Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research at the . « If you have kids? Trying to coordinate all that can be something else. »

Like Moore, Cedric Chambers, 61,ralph lauren polo sale, of North Chicago, cheap jordan for sale, has Type 2 diabetes and struggles to find quality food.

« We have a bunch of little stores but nothing bigger than a corner store, » Chambers said. « For me, it’s a problem. I don’t have a car. I try to get rides to Waukegan. »

Chambers and Moore participate in Be Well-Lake County, one of a few new initiatives that have sprouted in the suburbs and the city to increase access to healthy food for Type 2 diabetics and others in food deserts. A community health initiative started by NorthShore University HealthSystem, in collaboration with the Lake County Health Department and its Community Health Center, Be Well-Lake County provides diabetes care and education for medically underserved patients in .

« (Type 2) diabetes may not require medicine but it does require lifestyle management with regards to diet and exercise, » said Madeleine Shalowitz, a pediatrician at NorthShore. « In a food desert, things like healthy fruit and vegetables, christian louboutin cheap, a balance of whole grains and protein are difficult to get. »

The Be Well program provides dietitians, nutrition education and healthy cooking methods as well as manage a community vegetable garden where program participants can grow and harvest fresh food.

« We offer education on how to pick healthy food even if a convenience store is your only option, » said Christina Arnold, Be Well-Lake County diabetes program coordinator. « We look at what a patient can afford and what is available to them. We’ve gone out to convenience stores to find healthy choices: apples, bananas, oatmeal. »

Also targeting access to healthy food for Type 2 diabetics is the Greenlight Select program, launched in 2010 by Northwestern Medicine, and Near North Health Service Corp. for Near North diabetic patients. Its recipients receive « prescriptions » for healthy foods that are redeemable for discounts at certain Walgreens food desert locations.

Because convenience stores are often the only markets in food deserts, the Healthy HotSpot Corner Stores pilot program was launched in November in more than 20 small, local stores in eight suburban neighborhoods.

In Mount Prospect, for instance, convenience store Mi is participating in the program, administered by Communities Putting Prevention to Work, a partnership between the Cook County Department of Public Health and the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago.

With its help, Mi Mexico owner Francisco Perez was able to find potential distributors that could deliver fresh, healthy food items.

« Every day, we increase our healthy foods … wheat bread, fruit, » Perez said. « Customers have been more interested in healthy items and have been demanding them. »

Daily food choices can be influenced by factors other than the proximity of a supermarket. Healthy foods are generally more expensive on a calorie-by-calorie basis compared with processed junk foods, deterring many shoppers from making healthy choices.

« Calorie-dense food may seem less expensive if you don’t take into account food volume and weight, » said Rasa Kazlauskaite, an assistant professor in the preventive medicine and departments at . « If you approach it by volume, a bag of vegetables is cheaper than a candy bar. You get more for your money, discount designer handbags, can eat a lot and it’s not bad for you. »

Still, trying to eat healthfully on a budget is a challenge. « For me,cheap replica designer handbags, the problem is cost, » said diabetic patient Rhina Linares, 56, of Park City. She has a car and only has to drive 10 minutes to the Jewel-Osco between Gurnee and Waukegan.

« I want to buy fish, but it can be as much as $5 a pound. »

Brandon Johnson, executive director for the South Side community corporation Washington Park Consortium, said that bringing in more stores won’t necessarily mean more affordable, quality foods.

« We work with residents to figure out sustainable solutions to healthy food access, » he said. « We’re concerned with the quality of food and its affordability. Opening stores without thought of what’s being sold does not solve the problem. »

Meanwhile, Moore of North Chicago has taken matters into her own hands. She grows tomatoes, cucumbers and other produce at home and freezes them to save herself a trip to a distant supermarket.

« I’ve learned to plan meals, » Moore said. « I try to be smarter about it but accept my diet won’t be perfect. I can’t worry about it. Worry won’t bring a supermarket to town. »

Young marriage suffers from bickering, lack of sex

    Featured

Q: I have no idea why my husband of only two years won’t touch me. He doesn’t even want to kiss me good night. I’m thinking that maybe he’s not attracted to me anymore.

We fight all the time — or I should say that I am angry with him most of the time and I pick a fight over any little thing because I’m not getting any.

    So, what should I do?

A: Most people who have a bad relationship also have a bad sex life, and it seems that your relationship is terrible, so it’s not surprising that you have a lousy sex life.

You two need to straighten out your relationship, and if you can, I suspect your sex life will blossom once again. If you can’t do this by yourselves, then see a marital counselor.

If you don’t, your marriage is going to end, so it is important that you do something to repair the damage before it is too late and the relationship is so bad that it can’t be fixed.

Q: I am in a relationship with a man, whom I have been with for four years. I love him and he loves me, and we are still very much in love.

We have sex, but sometimes it doesn’t last as long as I would like. He tells me that I got the « new » him.

Mind you, we now have children, cheap jordans, and he is settled into the family-man lifestyle. He told me that the old him lasted a long time when it came to sex with other women. But now that he’s a family man, he feels that marathon sex is out the window.

I told him that it’s unfair that the women of his past received long-lasting pleasure, and now that he’s content with his family lifestyle, I get the short end of the stick. What should I do?

A: Many men have issues with control. Some start out having trouble, while others lose their ability to maintain their erections.

It’s hard to say what might cause a man to lose control, but having once had it usually makes it easier for him to be able to regain that control.

So, assuming your partner is telling the truth and he used to have control, if he would be willing to work with you on it, then it should be something he could relearn.

Talk about this some more, retro xi, and if he’s willing but not sure how to go about it, get him a book on the subject. If he has never had control, this will be a little harder to accomplish but not impossible.

Again, get him a book, cheap air jordan, and with some patience, he should meet with success.

Q: I have trouble with lubrication during intercourse. Can you give me a recipe for a homemade lubricant?

A: No, I can’t, because the ingredients you’re likely to find around your home are not appropriate to put inside your vagina.

First, you’re not supposed to use a douche because it washes out the good bacteria.

Second, if you put anything oily in your vagina, it creates an environment where bad bacteria can grow. But since you shouldn’t douche, then you can’t get rid of the oil. The water-based lubricants that are sold are safe, but they’re not something that you can duplicate at home,Jordan 12 sale, unless maybe you have a degree in chemistry!

If any of my readers do know how to easily create your own safe lubricant, please write in and let me know.

Q: Due to work availability, my husband and I have been apart for three months, and he has recently come home and we have sex a lot for hours at a time, but he can’t ejaculate.

Why is that, and what can we do? We need help, as he is leaving again tomorrow.

A: This answer isn’t going to reach you in time, but I’m still going to respond to you, as he will be coming back again.

The problem undoubtedly is that he was so anxious to have an orgasm that he distracted himself, wholesale designer handbags, and then he started to worry that he wasn’t having one, and that made it even harder. This could set up a pattern that will repeat each time he comes home.

So he must fill his head with erotic thoughts and push out any worries about whether he will have an orgasm. And you have to let him do this, most importantly by not saying a word about how long it is taking.

He’s going to need to concentrate on these erotic thoughts in his head, and if he does, I’m sure he’ll overcome this.

Probably. But just to be safe, I ask that sources now mention if there was a ridiculously jacked dude standing nearby when sending in a Hudson sighting. Oh, and if you see someone who looks like Otunga working out at an X Sport Fitness in Chicago, chances are it’s probably him.

Awk-ward: I’ve never known how wrestlers can stare each other down in the middle of the ring with their faces inches apart and not crack a smile. I always figured I would burst out laughing four seconds into a stare down just like I do every time I’m in a situation where I’m not supposed to laugh and would then take a few deep breaths before saying, “OK, OK, OK. For real this time.”

But much like most of Chris Rock’s movies, stare downs aren’t as funny as you’d think.

I asked WWE Superstar and former United States Champion Dolph Ziggler if we could stare each other down for a photo and learned stare downs are more awkward than anything. The whole thing lasted about five seconds, but it felt way longer. That’s probably because I was having what is really just a staring contest with a guy I’d never met before.

Once it was over, Ziggler said “I thought you were going to crack.” The truth is I never came close. The only thoughts that crossed my mind were A) This is weird B) This is really weird C) Dolph smells like Barbasol shaving cream. Still, thanks to Dolph for being a good sport about the whole thing.

He picked Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” as his song, but he did consider A.F.I.’s awesome “Miseria Cantare.”

No shirt: I was on a mission last week to buy my first WWE t-shirt in over a decade. It didn’t need to be a t-shirt I would wear to the bars or anything, just something I could wear at Wrestlemania Sunday and maybe in my next Chicago Tribune column photo.

This is a rush transcript from « The Five, » March 13, 2012. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

GREG GUTFELD, CO-HOST:So, a new study from Ohio State suggests that listening to rock ‘n’ roll like Bruce Springsteen or the White Stripes causes white people to favor their race over others. The theory is that rock is link to white, so listening to it makes you like whites more I guess — whatever, I don’t know.

It appears these researchers forgot rock ‘n’ roll was the first sport to America to break the color barrier. But, hey, it’s fun to watch a knee- jerk leftie like Springsteen get nailed with a crud he smears the right with all the time.

But this is why I love the modern cottage industry known as big race. When they ask what’s racist, it can be anything. Do you like vanilla over chocolate pudding? You’re racist. Do you like White Russians instead of Black Label? Bigot. Do you favor Cracker Jack over Mike and Ike’s? Well, clearly, the relationship between Mike and Ike disturbs you, making you a homophobe.

Of course, jordan retro for sale, the researchers didn’t have blacks listening to race-based rap like Public Enemy, or even their race-based lectures at the college.

But aren’t the real race-crazed folks the researchers themselves who spread this color-obsessed dogma? In a freak bubble like academia, it pays. Competition is replaced by peer acceptance, which pushes academics to return to racial politics like dogs to their own sick.

The fact is, rock ‘n’ roll may not make you racist but one thing I can guarantee, Ohio State can make you look like an idiot.

    DANA PERINO, CO-HOST:And you’re back.

GUTFELD:Yes. Is that the dumbest thing you heard, cheap air jordans, Andrea? I mean, Dana? Wow! Too much water, vodka.

    (LAUGHTER)

PERINO:Yes, it goes back, we could have a segment every day about stupid academic studies that are basically a waste of time and money.

GUTFELD:Yes. This is one of them. Definitely. What do you think?

ERIC BOLLING,jordan shoes 11, CO-HOST:Well, I’m trying to figure out. Is it — what does the study say? Does it say that rock causes people to become more racist or do people who are inherently racist gravitate towards rock music?

GUTFELD:The way I read it is because what you are listening to is played by whites, jordan xi, it makes you happier about being white.

TAMARA HOLDER, GUEST CO-HOST:It makes you whiter.

    BOLLING:You gravitate to –

GUTFELD:Yes. Just like whitening toothpaste for your skin I guess. I have no idea.

    PERINO:Why you’re just a bad dancer?

    GUTFELD:Why?

PERINO:Because you’re listening to white music.

GUTFELD:That could be true. I have no idea. That is study for Ohio State.

    What do you think?

HOLDER:There’s actually a better, stupider poll, and it’s the one that a couple of weeks ago that marijuana made you more lazy in the workplace. And it’s like, really? Are you serious that smoking pot makes you lazy? I feel like that –

    GUTFELD:Yes.

HOLDER:I would love to have a study that paid me to make something up.

GUTFELD:I tried to read that but I gave up on it.

    ANDREA TANTAROS, CO-HOST:You fell asleep.

GUTFELD:OK. Andrea, here’s the thing — would they have done it with rap music? Whatever thing they find, it would be uncomfortable with.

TANTAROS:Rap music is poetry. Look, this, if you are in Ohio, you should be angry. If you are a taxpayer in Ohio, you should say I want my money back because this is — I mean, it’s just ridiculous. If you live in the South, you like to listen to country music. Is this really a priority in Ohio State University?

GUTFELD:Here is something weird. What is going at South by Southwest, the festival at Austin, Texas, it’s a music festival.

An organization, a company, has actually turned homeless people to Wi- Fi spots. Basically they give them wireless routers and t-shirts that say I’m a hot spot. You can walk up and log on to their network with your phone. And you can pay the homeless person whatever they, whatever you feel is right for that.

Is this kind of weird, Dana? I got your name right. This is weird.

PERINO:I think it’s weird. When we say we want to create jobs and have innovation in America, I don’t know if this is exactly what we’re going for. But then I saw some of the homeless people said, we’re for it.

    So yes.

GUTFELD:That’s the one thing. If it’s actually — it’s the ultimate entry level job. Except what if you said I want you to hang my coat on you? How is that different?

BOLLING:This is all marketing. This is all BBA. Just fantastic marketing. Everyone is talking about it. All they’re doing is giving a homeless guy or whoever may or may not be homeless an iPhone. This is a Wi-Fi. You can turn this into a Wi-Fi spot.

Meanwhile, it’s all about the marketing.

    TANTAROS:I like this.

    BOLLING:Good job, fellas.

I like the direction that Texas is heading in with its future teams and I look to be a big part of that. We have a great future in front of us and we’re going to make big things happen.”

    Michael Hutchings

    De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)

    6-2/215

Hutchings says: “I feel like college coaches enjoy my versatility. I can play outside linebacker and safety, and I’ve earned these offers from making big plays at each position.”

His take on schools: Cal, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are five schools that have been on his radar screen for a while. “I would say the schools chasing hardest have been Cal, USC and UCLA. They are the three in-state schools and they want to keep the talent in state.”

    Peter Kalambayi

    Butler (Matthews, N.C.)

    6-3/230

Kalambayi says: “They say they like how I shoot my hands and how fast I am. I think the strength of my game is pass rushing.”

His take on schools: “Stanford, Virginia, jordan 4, Duke, Vanderbilt and Oregon are my leaders, in no particular order.”

    Micah Kiser

    Gilman (Baltimore)

    6-2/215

Kiser says: “College coaches like my athleticism. They like that I can move and defend against the pass, as well as the run. My biggest strength is my knowledge of the game and understanding what the offense is trying to do against the defense and how the defense needs to combat the offense.”

His take on schools: Kiser committed to Virginia just this week, choosing the Cavaliers over Maryland.

    Quinton Powell

    Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.)

    6-2/190

Powell says: “Coaches like my energy and hips.”

His take on schools: Powell has been committed to Florida for several months now, and is part of a class that is already strong on the defensive side of the ball. “I think Coach (Will) Muschamp is a great coach and I think his commitment is great.”

    Matt Rolin

    Briar Woods (Ashburn, Va.)

    6-4/210

Rolin says: “Coaches say that they like how I’m versatile. I can play more than one position. I’m being recruited for outside linebacker, jordan retro for sale, inside linebacker and tight end. They also say I play great in space and I’m explosive … I’d say the strength of my game is my athleticism.”

His take on schools: “My top five schools are South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Florida State and Virginia Tech, and my leader is South Carolina.”

    Garrett Sickels

Red Bank Reg (Little Silver, cheap jordan shoes, N.J.)

    6-4/230

Sickels says: Sickels is another candidate to play defensive end or linebacker. “Coaches say I play the game full speed and I have a great motor and I don’t stop going after the ball until the whistle blows. They say I’m a solid pass rusher as well … and I have very good instincts. The strength of my game would be my pass rushing and speed to the ball.”

His take on schools: “I’m committed to Penn State, but my top five before that was Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Florida.”

        a new Canadian study shows.

        Featured

The different allergy labels in common use may be confusing consumers instead of helping them decide whether to buy a food product, a new Canadian study shows.

« We should narrow (various allergy labels) to only one which will be clear, » said Dr. Moshe Ben-Shoshan, a professor of allergy and immunology at McGill University Health Center in Montreal, who worked on the study.

An estimated 2.5 million Canadians and 15 million Americans suffer from food allergies, which can cause reactions ranging in severity from itchiness and vomiting to breathing problems, loss of consciousness and even death.

Allergy labels are governed in the U.S. by the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004,jordan shoes 2012, and in Canada by the Food Allergen Labelling Regulations, a new version of which will go into effect in August.

Although all these labels warn that a product could harm a person with allergies, they present that message in various ways. Researchers found that some labels are less effective than others in helping consumers to avoid potentially dangerous foods.

Ben-Shoshan’s team recruited more than 2,400 subjects from the general public and from allergy registries and advocacy groups for the new study, conducted between May 2007 and March 2009. The work was funded by Health Canada, a federal agency, retro jordan 11, and AllerGen, a network of allergy experts, and published in a letter to the editor in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

The participants included « directly affected » households in which at least one family member had a food allergy, as well as « indirectly affected » households which supply food to others with allergies such as students and preschoolers.

They answered questions about their likelihood of buying a food product depending upon various types of allergy alerts, including « may contain » foods to which people are allergic, « manufactured in a facility » that processes such foods, and « not suitable » for people with food allergies.

Researchers found people were more likely to ignore warning labels if their households were directly rather than indirectly affected by food allergies. Those who belonged to advocacy groups were most vigilant about their food purchases.

About 44 percent of directly affected consumers from the general public said they would buy a product which warned it « may contain (peanut/tree nut/sesame). » Only about 10 percent of those recruited from allergy associations, and 16 percent of consumers indirectly affected by food allergies, said they would buy a product with this label.

Across all groups, retro jordan shoes, the « not suitable » label had the greatest effect in preventing purchase of a product. Participants in households were less vigilant if only adults had a food allergy than if a child had an allergy.

        Taking more personal risks?

The finding that consumers were less diligent about heeding labels when buying for their own households surprised researchers, said Ben-Shoshan.

« They may feel more responsibility when preparing food for other people, » he explained. Food purchases for an allergic person in one’s own household are also made much more frequently, which might make it harder to exercise caution, he added.

Adults may indeed take more chances with their own health than they would if the food allergy involves a child or someone outside their household, agreed Dr. Rauno Joks, chief of allergy and immunology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.

« They think they can get away with a certain amount (of restricted foods) before having a reaction, » said Joks. « I really caution them not to take chances with their health. »

The greater motivation to heed allergy labels among advocacy group members highlights the need for more awareness, he told Reuters Health.

« The more educated people are, the more likely they are to be proactive in avoiding food allergens, » said Joks, who was not involved in the study.

The findings in Canada should apply to the United States, cheap jordan 3, given their similarities in labeling standards and public awareness, he added.

The disorder appears to be on the increase in several countries, jordan air retro 4, especially among children. According to a 2008 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of food allergy rose 18 percent among children between 1997 and 2007.
